To create an expansion gap, insert wedges between the edge of the floor and the wall during fitting (place the wedges before fixing floorboards in place). once fitting is complete, remove them and cover or fill the gap.. Hi all currently tackling a standard floating floorboard install, just with cheapo boards from bunnings. anyway the instructions/stuff i've read all say you need an expansion gap of 1/4" around the perimeter, i think this is to ensure if the temperature rises and the wood expands that it doesn't all pop up etc?.
Everything i read about laying floorboards talks about having an expansion gap around the perimeter of the room but to my mind that is just plain daft.. Leave such expansion gaps everywhere where the floor meets a fixed object, such as: next to doorways, walls or heating pipes. in general, it is widely accepted that you need to leave an expansion gap of one and a half millimetre all the way around a given interior and wherever there's a fixed object.. Starting at one end of the room, lay a board across the joists, leaving a 10mm expansion gap between the board and the walls. use two fixings at each point where the board crosses a joist. loosely lay the next five rows in place and leaving a gap temporarily lay the next board..
