Boat Paint Over Gelcoat

In this video, i briefly discuss some of the advantages / disadvantages of each of these materials, as well as some considerations you should keep in mind when making these decisions.. The antifoul is definitely coming off as i won't be keeping it in the water and i'm keen to get that old "gelcoat look" back. the boat been completely stripped out inside and i can have it upturned to work on so practicality isn't a problem. i've heard of people painting over their gelcoat with a 2 pack paint that comes out "like gelcoat".. The gelcoat has the notorious crazing problems and i will be making some minor 'glass repairs, so sanding and polishing the existing gel coat is out of the question. this is not going to be a full factory restore and i going for more of a minimalist work-boat finish, but still want it to be presentable..

I'm closing in on the final stages of my rolled edge bayboat restoration and i could use some input. my hull is a 87 bayhawk and the gelcoat is pretty thin but intact and few scratches.. The gelcoat on my boat is very badly faded and also in some parts quite badly stained, wax and polishing seems not to work very well and is very temporary.. It’s important that the fiberglass is clean before you gelcoat over it. if there’s any dirt or dust on the fiberglass, it will get trapped under the gelcoat. go over the fiberglass with a soapy rag and then wipe it down with a clean rag to remove any leftover suds..
